(London.CityRegiions.com, November 25, 2012 ) London, UK -- The Halloween procession of pint-sized trick-or-treaters may have shown some the kind of ghouls and goblins the likes of which some have never seen. Companies have made the emphasis for on the proper mixture of scary, cool, and appealing. Add to that the full roster of fictional murderers from a seemingly endless supply of 80s and 90s slasher films, such as Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, and Chucky, the little ones can be so much more creepy than ever before. It is not only the retro costumes that can border on the creepy side. Compared to years in past, many of the old guard are almost too tame compared to the modern shock-inspiring costumes. Amber Boettcher took her 6-year-old daughter Addi to the Halloween stores near her home in Minnesota. The trip was quickly squelched as the young girl was confronted with the wide array of scary costumes. "She freaked out," Boettcher says. "The store was so gross and scary that we left." It is no secret that part of the enjoyment for many is based on the goring costume types. Decorations, just like the costumes, have become more gory than ever as the product quality has improved over the decades. Blood-splattered hands and possessed dummies are just the tip of the iceberg, and some go all out to create the goriest settings they can. For example, the national chain Party City’s “Boys Skinned Alive” costume is for all those over the age of four. Even simple outfits like “sock monkeys” can now be a bloody zombie sock monkey, decked out with razor-sharp teeth, sold in sizes small enough for kindergarten-aged kids. The companies in charge of the licensing handling the age groups and sizes capable. But while the ages might be set by the companies, many smaller children are able to fit into the costumes set for older kids. David J. Skal, has chronicled American’s interest in the horror genre since the 90s. “The Monster Show,” says he’s surprised that the level of “monster-ization of children” we’re seeing in recent years. He noted that making masks and costumes scary is nothing new "scary stories have been used to pass on a kind of coming-of-age message to children that the world is not always a safe and welcoming place." He added that it could be that parents are a bit more preoccupied with how unwelcoming the world has become. Even those within the industry note that costumes are becoming exceedingly scary and gory for the youth of today. Chris Alexander is Editor-in-Chief of Fangoria, a longtime running magazine. He states that the costumes of today are becoming gory enough that he feels they are simply too much for his own 5-year-old son. "My office is a nightmare come to life," he says, "but I would never dress my child up as Freddy Krueger or Jason. ... I'm quite shocked when I see it." It is not all endless fright, however, as video game characters are also becoming big in today’s market. About Costumes And Parties:
