(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 19, 2012 ) London, U.K -- For all the troubles Greece has experienced in the previous 2-3 years, one shining beacon of positivity is the online commerce sector, which has been growing. While no one is prepared to be too excited, as the rate still trailed the European Union Average, the survey conducted by the Electronic Commerce Laboratory at Athens University of Economics and Businesses at least shows some positive news.
The numbers expressed that online buying has expanded in Greece, as consumers become more familiarized with the information and technology used. That knowledge knowledge equates to users searchers for commodities at lower prices, and drives up overall purchasing.
In 2011, e-commerce between the Greek suppliers and consumers was considerably lower than in the year following. 2012 saw a 25% and 60% increase (depending on criteria used in assessment) from 2011's totals.
The total number of buyers was just under 2 million, which was up 400,000 from 2011. The average purchasing tally was at 1,600 euros in 2012, which constitutes a +400 move. Average number of purchases rose by 33% to hit 20 per customer. Total spent was a monumental rise, as it increase 1.1 billion from 2011 to 2012, and hitting 2.9 billion.
With all the rises in e-commerce, Greece still failed to meet the Western European average, and AUEB professor George Doukidis stated the EU average would mean online sales per year would need to be over 5 billion euros.
“We expect a rise in online purchases in the coming years, at least until they catch up with the EU average,” Doukidis says.
Greece's slower-than-average performance can easily be contributed to the lack of buying power inside the country, as well as a lack of purchasing from foreign buyers.
The sectors with the most positive motion for Greece was travel sales, as well as clothing. Travel websites like Pamediakopes.gr and TravelPlanet24.com have rise sharply. Clothing has seen a rise due to well-known brands being found at lower prices, according to Doukidis.
