(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 24, 2012 ) West Sussex, U.K -- E-commerce is making shopping easier for older shoppers in 2012. While many online retailers have largely ignored shoppers in the 50+ set, this is starting to change. Statistics from ChinaÂ’s taobao.com revealed that more than 1.75 million Chinese citizens, aged 50-and-older, have shopped using the website this year.
Taobao.com is ChinaÂ’s largest online marketplace (you can check it out at yoybuy.com in English) and seems to have found success in making shopping online easier for its countryÂ’s seniors.
The report released by the Chinese online superstore said that those 1.75 million Chinese seniors had used Taobao.com from January to October of this year and that 1.3 million of them had successfully navigted the site and made purchases without help from either automated help or contacting customer service.
The report also showed that women shopped more on the site than men, and that seniors from Shanghai seem to be the most active buyers in the 50+ set in the nation, making up nearly 10% of senior shoppers. Shirts and other tops are the number one item purchased by senior shoppers and nearly 9 million pieces of clothing of all types have been purchased on the website this year.
Over 190 million Chinese were 60 years-of-age or older, as of December 2011, and accounted for 14% of the countryÂ’s population, according to statistics made available by the Chinese National Committee on Aging. This number is likely to increase to over 200 million by the end of 2013 and by 2050 over one-third of all Chinese citizens are expected to be 60 years-of-age or older.
Some other studies suggest that a less-than-pleasant shopping environment outside the home may be one reason older Chinese shoppers are becoming more at-home online. A study conducted by the Beijing Consumer Association found that, out of 1,252 retired shoppers polled, that over 70% found medium/large shopping outlets to be dissatisfying to do business with.
