(London.CityRegiions.com, February 15, 2013 ) England, U.K -- When asked whether or not she planned to be engaged at such as young age as 18, Eman Hayyat stated that it never was a consideration to her. “I was not planning on that. It just kind of happened,” says the now-21-year-old University of Vermont global studies major. “He’s an awesome guy.”
A native of Middlebury, Hayyat is speaking of Alaa Bader, who is a 30-year-old engineer and lifelong family friend whom Hayaat married in a ceremony in Jordan in 2011. According to the traditions of the culture, however, they are not allowed to act married until past the celebration. Bader moved into a finished basement of Hayyat's parent's home in November, while the two remain in Burlington for schooling.
“We’ve never lived in a house together. We’ve never done anything. It’s very much like it’s a dating period,” explains Hayyat, a smart, fast-talking young woman whose parents moved to the States from the West Bank in 1979. “I cannot wait to get our life situated.”
Once Bader is capable of finding full employment following school in the spring, the couple will hold their wedding reception, and the feasting will begin.
Just as many New Americans, Hayyat's family will not order her wedding meal from a catering business or a restaurant. For most of these growing families that make up the immigrant and New-American population, the family is where the food starts and stops, and no catering service will do.
Hayyat stated she plans to incorporate some Western traditions, along with some Vermont touches, into her ceremony. Homestyle Mason jars will be given a Jordanian flair thanks to her own hand-painted henna designs. However, the main ingredient in the ceremony will be the food, and it will be wholly Middle Eastern. That is why Hayyat is utilizing her mother, Salwa, when it comes to the cooking. She will also call upon her brother, Sama, who is a local restaurateur, for assistance.
“I’m a chef, but, obviously, I was the one getting married, so I didn’t want to do it myself,” Sama says. “[Salwa] loves cooking. It’s something she’s done for me my whole life, and she does a great job.”
