(London.CityRegiions.com, February 15, 2013 ) England, U.K -- Fewer and fewer South Africans are getting married according to a new study released at the start of February. According to the numbers compiled, the number of registered unions have dropped almost 10% between 2003 and 2010.
"The number of civil and customary marriages registered every year declined by 8%" the South African Institute of Race Relations (SAIRR) a survey found despite a 12% population growth over the same seven years.
Marriages of the customary variety took their largest plunge in those year, falling to 42% compared to civil marriages, which declined by 4% in total. Meanwhile, the number of households grew by 19% over the same period of time.
Customary marriages within South Africa are a contract conducted by families under African traditional systems, while the civil marriages are performed by a government officer who holds the proper licensing, including those of the religious nature.
SAIRR stated that marriage trends are the barometer for the lifestyle changes that are seen across South Africa.
"The number of households is going up and the average household size is going down. This suggests that more people may be choosing to live on their own or with unmarried partners," said Thuthukani Ndebele, a researcher with the institute.
