(London.CityRegiions.com, March 05, 2013 ) Chester, U.K -- While ebooks may seem like the optimum format for social reading, kids say that print books are still better for bedtime stories and sharing with friends, according to Scholastic.
In a new addition of Kids & Family Reading Report, researchers asked children who were aged between 6 and 17, as well as their parents, regarding their habits for electronic and print reading.
The study noted that kids feel ebooks are better than print books when they do not want friends to know what they are reading or when they are traveling. Print books are still seen by children to be better for sharing with friends and reading during bedtime.
Currently, there are a rather limited number of options for lending ebooks to others people. However, it is surprising to hear from children that they enjoy the privacy, despite the availability of social media making almost all information only a handful of clicks away.
Since 2010, the number of children who state they have read an ebook has nearly doubled, rising from 25% to 46%. Half of the children who had not read an ebook stated that they would if they had any access to such media.
When it comes to parents? “We are seeing that kids today are drawn to both print books and ebooks, yet ereading seems to offer an exciting opportunity to attract and motivate boys and reluctant readers to read more books,” said Scholastic chief academic officer Francie Alexander in a statement. “While many parents express concern over the amount of time their child spends with technology, nearly half do not have a preference of format for their child’s books. The message is clear – parents want to encourage more reading, no matter the medium.”
