(London.CityRegions.com, March 14, 2013 ) England, U.K -- Sir Richard Branson, famed founder of Virgin Group and a man regarded as a business visionary, says he does not support the concept dealt by Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer regarding banning employees from working at home.
Other cutting-edge companies such as Telus and Google do not have hold such strong stances against telecommuting. Google, has a flat, collaborative structure. The case for working from home in Canada is mad informally on a case-by-base basis.
At Telus, which is the Canadian leader in wireless provisions, there is a company goals of having 70% of employees working from home within the next two years.
The wireless company studied the issue in 2006 and noted that employees who worked form home cut down greenhouse gases considerably.
At the same time, retention and engagement rates went up,” said spokesperson Jill Yetman in her interview with the Star.
Currently, Telus has more than 50% of over 27,000 employees in Canada working from home.
Yetman stated that the company believes it does not matter where one works, as long as one is productive. A sentiment that is likely to be echoed by more and more companies in the coming years behind the growing evidence that work does not slow down simply because one is not at work.
“Employees who goof off at home are probably the kind of people who are going to goof off at work,” Yetman said.
For his part, Branson took a rather harsh view of the Yahoo position on the matter, stating he believed that the pace of technology taken into consideration, people are going to look back in 30 years and wonder why offices ever existed.
“Many employees who work from home are extremely diligent, get their job done, and get to spend more time with their families,” Brandon wrote. “They waste less time commuting and get a better work-life balance. To force everybody to work in offices is old school thinking.” Last week, Mayer shook the business world with her staff memo banning the practice of working from home.
As a female CEO and new mother, Mayer faced much scrutiny over this memo. “To become the absolute best place to work, communication and collaboration will be important, so we need to be working side-by-side,” the memo read.
“That is why it is critical that we are all present in our offices. Some of the best decisions and insights come from hallway and cafeteria discussions, meeting new people, and impromptu team meetings. Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home. We need to be one Yahoo, and that starts with physically being together.”
