(London.CityRegions.com, March 16, 2013 ) Kent, UK -- For many, not having to drive to a gym to workout each day is a great excuse not to have to workout at all. Being able to forgo the drive and pop in the DVD is a better way to counter that often-used excuse. A new study now shows the positive effects of the home-based DVD experience.
Researchers tested the home-based exercise programs called FlexToBa which is aimed at improving flexibility, toning the body, and improving balance in all aspects for older adults. The goal: to cultivate the effective tool in getting the body and mind healthy.
The team recruited over 300 individuals that were over 65 years of age, half of which were asked to use a particular fitness video at home. The other half were asked to watch a different video that pertained to healthy aging.
The FlexToBa video had several hours of instructions that presented six sessions made to encourage a progressive exercise routine three times a week over a six month period. During the videos, individuals faced various challenges for the month, which were to help them stay engaged and encouraged them to build achievements.
Participants in the trial were then asked to complete daily exercise logs and receive short support telephone calls that involved exercise tips every other week for eight weeks, and then every four weeks.
At the end of the trial, those in the FlexToBa program saw “clinically important” improvements in many scores of physical function as compared to those in the control group. The tests included strength, balance, and gait.
Edward McAuley, a University of Illinois kinesiology and community health professor, who also helped lead the study, noted that people wanting to get into shape should set challenging by realistic goals for themselves.
“Doing anything is better than doing nothing and doing something is likely to give you confidence to do more. For older adults coupling aerobic activity (brisk walking) with activities that improve flexibility, strength and balance are likely to reap the greatest physical and mental health benefits,” McAuley said.
The study did not utilize a diet program. According to McAuley, the goal “was to determine whether we could deliver an exercise program that targeted flexibility, strength, and balance to older adults who typically would not be able to get access to center-based activity programs and to assess such a program’s effects on functional performance.”
