(London.CityRegions.com, March 17, 2013 ) Lancashire, UK -- The Groundbreaking to build up new homes with the United States fell within January; however, new permits for construction rose to a high that has not been seen in nearly half a decade. The fact reinforces expectations that the housing market will support the growth of the year.
The Commerce Department had stated on Wednesday that starts to building sites fell over 8% in January to under 900,000-unit annual rate. The decline has been said to be due to the sharp drop in volatile multi-family unit category housing, which saw nearly a quarter fall at 24.1% during the month. Starts for single-family units, which comprised of nearly two-thirds of total housing, edged 0.8% to the highest level since July of 2008. Permits for future construction also grew to a 925,000-unit rate, which is the fastest since June of 2008.
For the first time in four months, the U.S. Producer price jumped to match the rising food costs, which offset weak gasoline prices. Experts believe the general health of the economy should keep prices muted.
The Labor Department noted that the seasonal adjusted price index increased by 0.2% after slipping 0.3% at the end of 2012. The increase in prices received by farms, factories, and refineries was far below the 0.4% that economists had expected, and the Details of the report offered little sign of price pressures.
Wholesale prices were up 1.4% in January, which followed a 1.3% increase in December.
Cary Leahey, who is a senior adviser for Decision Economics in New York said of the issue: "The housing starts report was not as bad as it looked for two reasons. Starts did decline about twice as much as anyone had been looking for, but the decline happened in the multi-family area which tends to be volatile and permits for future construction rose.
"Single-family starts actually rose modestly in January. Both single-family permits and multi-family permits rose between 1.5% and 2% to the highest levels they've been in quite some time. That suggests housing starts will bounce back in February and March."
