(London.CityRegions.com, April 01, 2013 ) London, UK -- A new study shows that websites are now on par with veterinarians as the preferred source for horse-based research. The specific information looked up often involves racing and breeding industry information, according to New Zealand researchers.
The findings were based upon a 16-question survey conducted online and within new Zealand last year. The findings have now been published in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science.
Massey University researchers Charlotte Bolwell, David Gray, and Janet Reid set out to identify the research-based education specifics, and see whether or not the needs and preferred dissemination for horses.
Over 600 usable surveys were returned and included for the data analysis. The researchers found that the respondents were most interested in the research-based information on the feeding and nutrition end of horse-breeding. Injuries and lameness was also a often-looked for item, as well as general health and exercise. Training rounded out the most looked at items regarding the equines.
Veterinarians, websites, friends, and other horse owners were all at the top of the list for obtaining information. Social media and other online sources were rarely used for the animals.
Of all the respondents, 48% listed websites as the most common source used for general information. Veterinarians were second at 11%, while magazines and friends/other horse owners were at 10% apiece.
The most common online source used was Google, at 14%, while New Zealand Harness Racing Weekly was at 11%, and the New Zealand Horse & Pony magazine was at 7%.
Veterinarians were rated as the most preferable source by 80% of respondents, while 77% rated websites as preferable sources as well. Print magazines, online newsletters, and other owners were also rated as preferable.
