London, UK -- The American has been in scintillating form of late, winning three of his five tournaments this year, including an incredible eighth Arnold Palmer Invitational in Florida last month.
With Rory McIlroy – the man Woods replaced as number one – failing to make an impression at the Houston Open, the 14-time major champion is a hot favourite to win his fifth green jacket at Augusta.
It was 16 years ago that Woods won his first major in Georgia but he hasn’t won again here since 2005 and hasn’t won any major championship since 2008. With that in mind there will be plenty of sports spread bettors looking to take the 37-year-old on at a lofty spread on the outright win index.
Phil Mickleson has won three of his four majors here and also boasts another seven top ten finishes since 2000. He has dropped to tenth in the rankings, and was last seen down the field in the Houston Open, but it’s clear this is his favourite course and he is likely to make a bold bid to match his great adversary Woods’ record of four wins.
McIlroy won’t have fond memories of Augusta having collapsed in the 2011 final round and throwing away a four-shot lead to finish that round eight over par. He is likely to be popular with bettors but the best he has managed this year has been a tie of eighth in the WGC-Cadillac Open. The Northern Irishman has been in bullish form, though, and his compatriots know when he is at the top of his game he’s hard to beat.
However, Europeans have a dreadful record in the $8 million tournament. No player from Europe has won since 1999 when Spaniard Jose Maria Olazabal lifted the prize. Nick Faldo was the last Englishman to be crowned champion in 1996 – his third triumph. And, although things have improved in recent years (2008 and 2009 saw no Englishmen in the top ten), Lee Westwood’s second in 2010 and Luke Donald’s tied fourth in 2011 are the best results in the last five years.
Americans have seemingly dominated their tournament with eight wins since 2000 but have only won two of the last five renewals. Woods and Mickleson are responsible for six of those eight wins and the last few years have seen a slight trend away from home supremacy.
The number of Americans finishing in the top ten/tied top ten over the last five years are as follows; 2012 (three), 2011 (three), 2010 (seven) 2009 (ten) and 2008 (five).
Four of the last ten Masters have gone to a play-off. The average winning score to par in the last ten years is -8.7.
2012 hero Bubba Watson was just the fourth left-hander to win a major and is looking to become the first man since Woods in 2002 to defend his title. Before that Faldo 1989-1990 was the last man to win successive titles. Punters should be warned that no world number one has won the tournament since 2002, but that was Woods.
Excluding four settled by play-offs, the last ten Masters have been won by an average of 2.3 shots. Woods holds the record for biggest winning margin, 12 shots. No other player has ever won by a double-figure score.
Masters tradition dictates that some players take part in a par-three tournament on the Wednesday before the tournament on the nine-hole course. No player has ever won this informal match-up and gone on to win the Masters. Woods, mindful of this, will never play the par-three contest.
