(London.CityRegions.com, April 26, 2013 ) England, UK -- Britain is currently suffering its highest number winter death rates in quite sometime, and currently has the most death rates of anywhere in Europe. There are over 7,000 people who are dying in cold homes each year. Big companies will need to start paying attention to carbon tax starting tomorrow,. It is expected to raise over £ 1.5 billion this year alone, but may rake in £60 billion over a 15-year period.
The campaign for the Energy Bill Revolution is calling on Government to utilize the windfall to gain national program funds to help make homes more energy efficient. This would include free insulation for doors, windows, floors, roofs, and anywhere else that can be properly filled in. It will also make room for 130,000 jobs, which will encourage economic motion.
Charity Age UK has stated that a long spell of cold weather over the winter may be causing thousand of extra deaths amongst the elderly. Michelle Mitchell, who is charity director at Age UK stated “Living in a cold, poorly insulated home is not only miserable, but has serious health risks for older people.”
“Those living in cold homes are three times more likely to die prematurely from a heart-attack or stroke as those living in warmer ones.” Energy Bill Revolution, an alliance of 120 firms, charities, consumer groups and unions, says energy efficiency improvements could slash heating bills.”
The saving of £400 per year would help out those who are cash-strapped, and offer reprieve from the rising bills that are felt across the EU. Average dual fuel bills have risen by over £100 within the last year to a total of £1,279, according to the Department of Energy and Climate Change.
Meanwhile, gas shortages over the same period have caused bills to shoot up even higher.
The group wrote to the Chancellor George Osborne, and outlined theories, which included using a tax revenue to cut the rate on the Government loan-based efficiency schemes (such as those caused by Green Deal). At present, there are over five million households that are in fuel poverty. This number is predicted to rise by nearly 8 million by 2017.
