(London.CityRegions.com, May 02, 2013 ) London, UK -- A new study's findings, which were released early in 2013, has found that certain areas of an infant's brain could possess clues to that child's future language capabilities.
Researchers at the University of Washington, including Patricia Kuhl, who was the study's co-author and co-director of the university's Institute for Learning & Brain Sciences, stated that the brain of a 1-year-old baby could potentially indicate their general skill in language later in life.
Kuhl stated “The brain of the baby holds an infinite number of secrets just waiting to be uncovered, and these discoveries will show us why infants learn languages like sponges, far surpassing our skills as adults.”
An even more recent study that was conducted abroad, found that babies' brains are capable of consciously experiencing the world as early as 5 months after birth.
Researchers were led by Laboratoire de Sciences Cognitives et Psycholinguistique in Paris and the Technical University of Denmark’s own Sid Kouider stated that infants within the first few months of life react and behave with general awareness, rather than simply based upon reflexes.
Utilizing adult patterns of conscious brain activity, scientists mapped the brains of 30 5-month-old children, 29 12-month-old children, and also 21 15-month old children within the experiment. While seated in the laps of respective parents, and hooked to electrodes, the children would be given screens to watch. The screens occasionally flashed a photograph of the face, according to the researchers.
In the study, researchers found that neural patterns within the children matched patterns seen within adults.
“[Results were] about four times slower, actually, in the younger infants,” Kouider noted, adding that unfinished brain development was likely the cause for the discrepancy.
The study was released through the publishing in a journal of Science in April.
