(London.CityRegions.com, May 05, 2013 ) England, UK -- While simply “liking” a human rights group or a political activist may not be the most world-shattering way to voice one's opinion on a social or political level, it does have some basis of power. According to new research from the Pew Research Center, the act of 'liking' something is at least an action a person of almost any age, and any location or economic status can do, and does, on a regular basis.
The study also shows that social media, in general, has become a popular platform for anyone in political involvement. It is not quite a launchpad for whole-world revolution just yet ,and is under heavy scrutiny. There are still considerable sectarian stances and traditionally defined political actions that exist in social media, according to the study.
Pew's Internet & American Life Projectphone survey of 2,235 American adults, 39% took part in “political activities” through social media during the recent United States Presidential election. That is a total that has risen from 26% in the previous election four years prior. Such link-posting, political-friending and general discussion of issues with other members by standard users shows to be a way to promote individuals to thinking about interacting with politics in other ways.
Age seems to play little in the matter of discussion of politics on social media. Discussion seems to also have a stronger foothold in the richer or poorer demographics either. That could likely be the most interesting takeaway from the numbers coming out of the study. For instance, those who earned more than $100,000 per year were just as likely to discuss and partake in some form of social-networking politicking as someone who made $10,000 per year.
However, there were patterns that emerged, according to Aaron Smith, the study's author. "If you look at education instead of income, you see the same long-standing pattern where the college-educated are especially likely to use these sites for political purposes."
He also noted that the cause-and-effect of using the social media before or after being involved in politics was not clearly defined. "These new channels do not appear to be altering the fundamental pattern that the well-educated and financially well-off are more likely to participate in civic life."
