(London.CityRegions.com, May 07, 2013 ) England, UK -- The mixture of designs can sometimes be a slippery slope into madness when it comes to decorating. The process can go oh-so-right, but by overstepping the capability of certain designs or overreaching for a grand theme, one can do too much mixing and not enough efficient decorating.
Foyers are not only the literal entrance to some houses, but also are an introduction to the theme of the house. Color and design wise as well as theme. But it does not always have to be an immediate and literal microcosm of the overall theme of the next room. Mixing two diverse concepts, such as modern and traditional can be tough, but can also be done with a keen eye.
While modern tends to work with bold and edgy colors to elicit reaction and the imagination, traditional style tends to work with softer and less explosive concepts and colors. So how to blend the two ideas together can be a difficult project to tackle.
For a foray, utilizing traditional furniture can be used, such as rich-colored benches and chests that utilize light wood, can be melded with a more contemporary look and blend of gold and white colored items. These items are capable of handling more modern designs without necessarily clashing with the traditional look of the former items. Utilizing traditional color-schemes and major items, mixed with more modern smaller items to accent the backdrop, while still keeping with the general color theme can truly add to a room.
The mixture of traditional with modern in a seamless, or at least complementary blend, can help a room stay away from the dreaded look of being lifted directly from a catalog. It allows a room and its designer to have an identify of his/her own, without suffocating one under the basic 1+1=2 dynamic many become stuck in while creating a design and feel for a room.
Most important, the creation of a complementary foray allows for other rooms in the house to take on either a more modern or traditional look without clashing with other rooms that hold a different identity.
