(London.CityRegions.com, May 07, 2013 ) London, UK -- For many of the fans across the globe who watch shows such as CSI series or other crime-lab dramas, the use of surveillance cameras to identify 'perps' is nothing new.
Fingerprints have their role in the shows, but anyone who even partially follows such a series knows that if you really want to nab and bad guy and have no questions or controversy, it often falls to “Do we have the DNA.”
Many of the real-life safety officials can be heard complaining about how TV has inundated jurors with the concept that without DNA to prove the case, one simply does not have a good case. Contrast this fact to the British safety officials, who are much more interested in “do we have video?” to solve the case. In today's modern Britain, the answer to the later question is often “yes, we certainly do.”
The reason for that positive result has everything to do with the large number of CCTV cameras. As the United Kingdom's Daily Mail newspaper noted "Shocking study reveals UK has one closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera for every 32 people". That was released in 2010, and it is almost certain the total number of cameras has gone up since the release of that study.
It is not just CCTV either, as there are drone aircraft, as well as smaller military models that have cameras on them as well (though these are used less often). The Daily Mail stated that 2011 survey showed that 1.84 million CCTV cameras were in action each day and every night.
Many of the cameras are equipped with the latest technology that can identify car licenses as well as dawning facial recognition technology.
The latest studies on the matter show that it is good at preventing crime in parking lots, while it is less capable when it comes to curbing public transport crime. Studies have shown it has almost no effect on street crime however.
Due to the recent events in Boston, and the fact that the cameras were able to capture the faces of the two young men, the support for CCTV cameras to prevent and solve crime has grown in the States.
In "Caught on camera: Boston manhunt sparks debate over more surveillance," the Washington online news site The Hill reported on April 22 that, "The number of images snapped of the two suspects reflects deep changes in American society since the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks."
"Cameras capturing the public's every move have become much more common and are used for everything from protecting homeland security to ticketing traffic violations such as speeding."
