(London.CityRegions.com, May 18, 2013 ) London, UK -- Locals in the town of South Lakeland are saddened by the closure of two youth hostels - a move that is expected to have an effect on local businesses. Both hostels were owned by the Youth Hostel Association (YHA), a UK-based charity, and were deemed too expensive to renovate. The Elterwater hostel had been in business since 1939, while the Arnside location opened in 1978. With the Youth Hostel Association pouring an estimated £2 million into the historic Ambleside and Black Sail hostels, it could not pour an additional £1.2 million into renovating the Elterwater and Arnside locations. Some locals are not too happy about YHA’s choice of which hostels to restore, citing that focusing on more tourist-friendly destinations, such as Canterbury, York and Stratford comes only at the expense of other places. Youth hostels have been an integral part of the Lake District since the 1930s, many visitors even taking walking vacations between the various hostels. The news was met with tribulation on all sides and even some concern on the part of residents and the local MP, particularly because the city has had a youth hostel for the past 65 years. Some of the more vocal members of the community were shops and restaurants who expect to see a decrease in revenue as a result of the hostel closures. There were often large groups of students on field trips or weekend holidays in the area. Inns, pubs and bakeries in the surrounding area were used to hostel goers coming in for drinks or refreshment - something that those owners can no longer count on. A spokesperson from the YHA explained how they are trying to improve the experience for youth and that difficult decisions, such as these closures are, unfortunately, a part of that. The remaining staff will likely be placed in other locations. About RestUpHostel.co.uk
