(London.CityRegions.com, May 18, 2013 ) London, UK -- College advisors are professionals who are supposed to guide individuals throughout their college careers, helping a student to know exactly what they can expect from their degree. Understanding what opportunities are made available through the degree, as well as knowing how much they can expect from said opportunities is part of the job.
Advisers are set to carefully study the general market for particular degrees, and understand just how the degrees attained can enhance one's opportunities in the job market. These predictions are often made based off of statistics and current trends in the market.
Often times universities will have job fairs to help students also understand exactly how likely they are to effectively vie for jobs. However, these days, it seems that advisors are having to give more and more grim news to many in varying degree types, as the cost of schools, plus the meek job market make it tough for anyone to find effective and worthwhile work.
The cost of colleges has exploded over the past decade. In order to attract more and more students to continue their intellectual pursuits, false promises are being levied by said advisors. Meanwhile, nearly a quarter of all students leave school struggle to find any work at all. Often times what one finds is 'underemployment' which is often jobs that do not require a degree.
Recently the EKU chapter of Young Americans for Liberty handed out fliers to graduates at the Eastern Kentucky University which stated: “Good luck finding your first job. Only 47% of you will be able to find a job in your preferred field, so I hope you’re still on good terms with your parents.”
Experts point to the problem as three fold. The 'soft' degrees such as liberal arts, music or fitness, and literary/historical degrees carry with them little weight as jobs are sparse. Meanwhile, business and science-based degrees have far too many vying for the same slice of pie. Add all that to the ever-mounting debt that is accrued during any endeavor, and one can easily see why the current situation for all graduating individuals is bleak.
