(London.CityRegions.com, May 19, 2013 ) Wetherby, UK -- A new study finds that mobile phones have a bigger impact on relationships than what was previously thought. Even if a phone never rings, the presence of a phone can impact how close a relationship is just by being in the room.
According to the study, participants reported that they felt more intimate and trust when cellphones were not a distraction during a dinner or a normal hangout. Not only that, but paying more attention to a cell phone than a stranger may initially hurt any future relationship with that person, LiveJournal reported.
While the use of social media and text messaging has improved society by being able to communicate with people and keep in touch easier, Andrew Prizbylski, the lead author of the study at the University of Essex this highlights the downsides to constantly having a mobile phone with you.
Przybylski says he got the idea of the study after he noticed restaurant-goers noticeable leaving their phones out on the table during eating and discussion. While mobile access to communication may make you socially popular via technology, humans are losing their ability to communicate effectively in a face-to-face conversation.
In the experiments, Przybylski noted that just the mere presence of a telephone near the group affected the way a conversation went. Where cellphones were replaced by little black notebooks, the conversations were more meaningful and remembered.
Keeping Interaction Intimate
If you’re going out to dinner, a good tip would be to leave your phone in your purse or locked in your car, especially when doing business or having an intimate dinner. Pagers use to be an effective way of blocking the non-emergency communication from the urgent messages, but since cell phones have taken over, there’s no way to know if a phone call is important until you answer. When out for a night on the town and worried about kids or another situation, a person can excuse themselves to take a couple breaks to the bathroom and check their phone there.
