(London.CityRegions.com, June 22, 2013 ) London, UK -- Sebastian Tscocanos and Robin Walter, both former Colorado College students, plan to spend the five months traveling 1,400 miles on horseback through the Great Plains, studying the environment and animals around the prairie grasslands, in an attempt to show people how important it is to protect America’s grasslands.
During their study, they will to camp out, interview ranchers and conservationists they pass by, and will blog about their adventures. They also plan to give talks to tourists and other travelers on conservation. Walter, who has worked as a photographer, will also work on documenting the experience through pictures and film. Their goal for the expedition is to create a documentary when they are done on grassland conservation.
The Colorado College’s State of the Rockies Project will sponsor the expedition. The department has spent the last year looking at conservation areas in public and private schools.
Tsocanos and Walter plan to ride 15 miles a day during their journey. Growing up, both have spent much time on horseback. Two days a week they will rest their mounts, their rescue dog Winnie and their pack mule. During their time in Wyoming, they will take more time to rest, making sure their leased horses are in shape, and take care of themselves.
Tsocanos majored in environmental science and did his undergraduate thesis work on the Remnant Tall Grass Prairie of El Paso County,Texas. During his study, he found that many factors, including invasive species, urban development and overgrazing are causing the plants to die out and become endangered. That type of species of Tall Grass is important to the environment in those areas, providing food and shelter for small animals.
Walter originally majored in creative writing and poetry and in her spare time has taught outdoor education in her part to help protect the environment.
This isn’t the first time the duo has done significant things to help the environment. Last year, they interned on an organic farm in Hotchkiss, while they learned about horticulture and self-sustainability. The first three months of this year, they helped to create a national park in Patagonia, running a greenhouse for a local conservation group.
