(London.CityRegions.com, June 26, 2013 ) Kent, UK -- Everyone knows that there are different levels of sleepers. Some will be bolstered out of sleep at the drop of a pin. Even the smallest movement or noise can wake them up. Others seem to be able to sleep through just about anything in the world. So what makes some deeper sleepers than others?
Chief of Massachusetts General Hospital's Division of Sleep Medicine, Dr. Jeff Ellenbogen recently led a study that looked at the particular brain waves that are known as sleep spindles. The number of spindles a person's brain creates during the sleep process can apparently predict how deep the sleep is, according to the study.
While within sleep, a person's brain waves will slow and become more paced/regular. Sporadic brain bursts that occur with higher-frequency waves are noted as sleep spindles.
Ellenbogen studied healthy volunteers in his sleep laboratories for three consecutive nights of rested sleep. The first nights saw blissful sleep with large beds and no interruptions. The colleagues noted the brain spindles, and then watched the changes that were created in two consecutive nights as more noise was added to the sleeping individuals. Varying volumes and differing sounds saw spindle rates jump about and become less stable.
Age also is a factor in the spindles, according to the researchers. Many become more prone to noises awaking them, which could explain why people do not sleep as well when they age.
Research has found a steady correlation between spindle rates and learning potential. One study released in 2007 found that spindles at higher volumes during sleep also was a predictor of higher IQ. The spindles a person can produce during sleep correlates to a person's consolidated memories, according to a cited study noted by Ellenbogen.
Ellenbogen is now looking into natural ways to enhance sleep or spindles created during sleep. Causal effect is not yet determined in his studies. From the research, however, can be seen correlations in bed type, quality of bed, surrounding silence, and disturbance factors.
