(London.CityRegions.com, July 02, 2013 ) London, UK -- A special class organized by the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh and the Center for Arts and Education at West Liberty University brought together students from elementary education, graphic design and art education to make education more artistic.
The curator of education and interpretation at the Warhol, Tresa Varner, explained that the course shows students and teachers how to integrate art into the classroom.
One of the exercises involved students using photographic silk screen printing techniques to create art to be used in social environments to make a point. The art could be easily mass produced, making it an effective tool. WLU students mastered the concept and incorporated various ideas such as creativity or conservation to express themselves.
Varner explained that the diversity of students taking the course allowed for a more interesting mix as non-art majors partook in the various art projects. Many of the students, who don’t consider themselves artists, were able to create something and gain confidence in the field.
According to Lou Karas, education director for the West Liberty University Center for Arts and Education, the class was part of an ongoing project between the museum and the center. The Benedum Foundation funded the project for two years.
Karas explained that they are now able to work with undergraduates before they begin student teaching. In workshops for these students they learn about technique, the works of Andy Warhol and then are able to apply what they learned in the classroom.
The portable silk screening equipment was paid for by the grant and has been a great tool, said Karas. Furthermore, students were able to tour the museum and learn the techniques, which then led to five separate classes to disseminate the learning.
The dean of the WLU College of Education, Keely Camden, remarked on the tremendous opportunity that the partnership has provided to students. By giving them new mediums to explore, art has brought education to life in a fun and deliberate process. She explained how the school values partnerships such as the one with the Warhol museum because of the opportunity for collaboration and education outside the classroom.
