(London.CityRegions.com, July 06, 2013 ) Essex, UK -- A new study has concluded that the positive-parenting approach that the UK government has been pushing off on parents for quite a number of years sets parents up to fail.
The study was published in the journal Ethics and Education. An expert in family law at the London School of Economics, Helen Reece believes that having an obsession with being nice to children is impossible and can destroy any chances of natural parent-child relationships, while at the same time making parents feel like failures if they have a mental breakdown after a terrible day.
In particular, Reece attacks the “official” handbooks that are published by the Department of Health that are given to parents when they give birth to a newborn in a hospital, called the “Birth of Five”, that gives parenting advice on matters from feeding to how to speak to young children.
The handbook tells parents they should never raise their voice to their child, but instead focus on only the good things their child has done, even if the child’s misbehavior comes to dominate everything. Reece explains that while young children are very vulnerable and need nurturing, expecting parents to be perfect in a sense that they let their child do anything they want puts an impossible burden on their shoulders.
Dr. Ellie Lee, who is the director of the centre for Parenting Culture Studies at Kent University agrees with Ms. Reece’s paper and thinks that it sheds good light on what happens when policies are put in place to teach parents how to raise their children. Hopefully, she says, politicians will listen to her paper and change the way parents are advised.
