(London.CityRegions.com, July 18, 2013 ) Gloucestershire, UK -- This week, Apple (manufacturer of iPhone, iPod and iPad devices) will be celebrating the fifth anniversary of the opening of its App Store. The App Store has helped sell 600 million of the company’s innovative devices since it opened. The store itself has posted some impressive numbers also: over £6.6bn has been paid out to the developers of the apps and 50bn apps have been downloaded so far.
Apple has built a thriving demand for tablet and smartphone apps since its launch in 2008 and, with 48bn downloads to date; Windows Phone, BlackBerry and Google's Android app store have piggybacked on this demand. Even though the Android operating system currently accounts for seventy-five percent of smartphone sales, the iOS is generating more than two thirds of the mobile apps market. This year, the global mobile apps market is estimated to be worth £17.8bn, according to industry analyst ABI Research.
The apps have had a significant impact on a range of industries over the past half decade. The impact has been negative on one hand, by increasing competition and positive on the other, by increasing demand and sparking innovation. Entertainment services such as Netflix, Spotify and BBC iPlayer have felt the impact as well as online retailers such as eBay. For 2013, mobile sales involving eBay are expected to approach $20bn.
The most lucrative apps have involved games but applications have also been beneficial to the rise of social networking services such as Twitter and Facebook. Sixty percent of Twitter's 140m active users access the service from mobile devices and seventy-five percent of Facebook users do likewise.
Some developers of popular apps have become very wealthy almost overnight when their startups have been acquired by the big boys. Four months after seventeen-year-old Brit Nick D'Aloisio launched Summly; it was purchased by Yahoo for £18m. In 2012, Facebook acquired Instagram for $1bn. Instagram was a newly developed photo-sharing app that made some lucky developer very, very wealthy indeed.
