(London.CityRegions.com, July 20, 2013 ) London, UK -- Cheap takeaway food may come at a high cost in New Zealand. The Masala restaurant chain, part of which is in voluntary liquidation, has locations in prime spots across the country such as Auckland, Titirangi, Takapuna, Birkenhead and Mission Bay; two more will open soon in New Lynn and Mt Eden as well. The restaurants are decked out with chandeliers, tables with leather chairs and white tablecloths -- no expense is spared. The menu includes $10 lunch specials, which offer a drink, naan and curry along with evening mains for $10 from Monday to Wednesday. The cheap prices and luxurious atmosphere keep diners coming in. It has made the owners and management wealthy.
The managing director of the fifteen or more interrelated companies that make up the chain lives in Remuera in a $2.25 million mansion. The organization owns millions of dollars in property and the directors drive around in late model SUVs or Mercedes. However, the workers
do not drive around anywhere and live in basic dormitories underneath the restaurant. Many of them are imported from India.
The Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment is currently investigating Masala on a claim made by former employees. Reports were filed that claim workers lived in overcrowded space (for which their earnings were deducted), were not paid leave entitlements and received only $265 a week in the hand for 70 hours of work -- or $4 an hour.Complicating the matter is that some of the companies in the organization went into voluntary liquidation recently, during company restructuring. This left some of the employees without holiday pay. Sources at Masala speculate this might have caused the complaint. Liquidator John Gilbert is investigating but says, "I have no evidence that they did not pay their staff reasonable wages. There is evidence that when staff needed to go [overseas] for funerals, they would be advanced money. They were not bad employers in that way."
