(London.CityRegions.com, August 10, 2013 ) London, UK -- Jo Swinson, Consumer Minister for the UK recently unveiled draft proposals which would force customer service companies such as Royal Mail, Phones4U, PC World and Argos to charge “geographic”, or normal landline prices, to customers ringing in for help.
Government watchdogs called it the beginning of the end for 084 and 087 numbers which ripoff consumers with extremely high collect call prices. However, they asked for the government to go further in their ban when proposal revealed that the ban would not cover transport or financial service sectors.
According to government reports, consumers spend nearly 2 billion euros each year on calls to premium rate numbers. In 2009, they accounts for nearly 12 percent of the total call traffic volume in the United Kingdom, and generated about 10 percent of the overall revenue.
Experts claim consumers spent as much as 41p per minute to call an 085 number from a mobile phone. They add that the telecom company carrying the call can also charge extra to households for the connection, incurring even more fees for the customer.
The consumer proposals are still out for consultation until the end of this year, but if approved, would become law as soon as 2014.
