(EMAILWIRE.COM, May 05, 2012 ) York, UK -- Lavender has never gone out of fashion, used for centuries people have always understood its many benefits for a myriad of tasks from aromatherapy to cleaning to first aid.
However, now it seems its popularity is bigger than ever before, with many people realising that its unique properties are unmatched by any other natural plant. Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth the First were strong believers in lavender where the former would use it for cleaning, the latter would not dine without a lavender preserve on the royal table.
Lavender is now a staple for using around the house, sitting neatly in the herb cupboard for cooking, in the first aid box for bruises, the bathroom for pampering and the cleaning cupboard for polishing it’s difficult to think of a daily task that doesn’t benefit from the use of lavender.
In the Cleaning Cupboard
Lavender oil is an amazing cleaning tool as not only does it add a polished surface to any wood, treating it with nutrients and fragrance it also has natural antiseptic qualities that ensure germs are safely removed too. Try mixing with a little linseed oil for polishing wood, or add a couple of drops to a bathroom or kitchen cleaner for ceramic surfaces. It will also make the whole house smell delightful if added to the mop bucket when cleaning the floors.
Another good tip is to use lavender on carpets, grind well into a powder and sprinkle over carpets an hour before vacuuming and when changing the beds, spritz a little lavender onto the bedding for the most relaxing pillow mist one can ever experience.
In the First Aid Cupboard
Lavender with its natural antiseptic and soothing properties is ideal for apply to cuts, grazes and bruises. Apply neat to bruises and diluted to cuts and grazes. It will soothe and soften the skin whilst killing any germs that may linger. It is also famed for its relaxing skills that alleviate headaches and promote easy breathing, so if one is suffering from a migraine or cold either use in an oil burner to fill the whole room, apply neatly to temples, or if lucky enough to be able to spend the day in bed, apply directly to the pillow. Of course these benefits also lend themselves well to pampering, so one can add some drops to the bath water or add to almond oil for a luxurious massage.
In the Larder
Lavender is making a huge comeback in the kitchen. Although years ago it was used in all types of cooking, only now are our modern Michelin starred chefs using it regularly to add flavour and colour to gourmet dishes. One can easily do this at home, either through experimentation or by following one of the many lavender recipes online. The trick is to use it sparingly, in savoury cooking when starting out try swapping half rosemary for lavender in stews, with roast meat and in soups. In sweet cooking it pairs well with homemade ice cream, biscuits and custards. The flowers are also completely edible so as one serve a dish be sure to add a few fragrant flowers to highlight the use of lavender.
