(London.CityRegiions.com, November 29, 2012 ) Cambridgeshire, UK -- A new wave of construction breaking/entering and general thefts have caused Regina police to issue an advisory to builders to better secure their tools, and watch out for suspicious behavior. "[Thieves are] getting a little more bold to go into new construction homes and also that people are leaving their stuff unsecure," said Kaeli Decelles, social media officer with the Regina Police Service. As recently as Thursday through Saturday of last week, eight newly build homes in the Harbour Landing area, as well as a site in Green and Gardiner, were broken into. Those thefts bring the total to 51 incidents within the last twelve months. Carcelles has advised workers to do a better job securing their property, rather than simply relying on locked doors. When possible, she advised that the workers must take their tools home with them. Darcelles also suggested that the weather may be a factor in the number of incidents. She also noted the number of break-ins correlated with the population and construction boom. The difficulty of catching thieves in the act is that it does not take long for an individual to nab items from a site, once they have broken in. Regina and Region Home Builders’ Association (RRHBA) and the Crime Stoppers launched a public awareness campaign last week, in order to help combat the theft issue. President of RRHBA said one misnomer regarding theft of construction sites is that they assume it is a victimless crime. "Like anything, to provide better security so these things don't occur, [it] comes at a cost," he said. "Ultimately, those costs fall back on to the homeowner eventually, maybe not this specific house but a house in the future."
Niebergall noted that construction theft involves lumber, supplies, and tools. He stated one way to guard against the thefts at commercial and industrial sites is to build proper fences. For residential constructions, this method is impractical, and locking up (or taking home) equipment is preferable.
