(London.CityRegiions.com, February 22, 2013 ) England, U.K -- On the new season of “The Bachelorette”, which has entered season eight, Seattle's Doug Clerget went in for the kiss just as the centerpiece of the show dumped him.
“A lot of people know me as Awkward Kiss Doug now," he said with a laugh. It is the type of scene that reality shows thrive on and hope for. And, in this particular case, it really was made for TV. The show's producers nudged Doug to go for the kiss, prompting him to be set up for the embarrassing moment.
"So I kind of got set up a little. The producers knew I was going home," he said.
Doug is filled with stories of the behind-the-scene goings-ons that occurred during the show. When he was driving away from Emily, viewers saw him crying and emotional.
"I don't think I've cried since '83," Doug insisted. "I'm not a crier. I was probably five the last time I cried."
Some might wonder what got the waterworks flowing in Doug's case. Right before the show's taping began, one of the most important people in Doug's life, his grandfather, passed to leukemia. Doug was thus emotionally raw, and threw himself directly into a show that drove on taking advantage of people's emotions.
"They're like, 'We didn't get enough about your grandpa so let's talk about your grandpa.' I'm like, 'I'm not going to talk about him.' They say 'We really need this before you go. We don't have enough footage on this.'"
Doug had been crying about his grandfather, as he talked about the situations, and the producers had apparently thrown it in as if it were a question about Emily.
"When I saw it I texted some of the producers and said, 'Really guys?'" he said.
With those tactics behind him, the father one one who wore his heart on his sleeve has now turned his attention back to regular life. That is something easier said than done according to Doug's 12-year-old son, Austin.
"It gets annoying sometimes because it's people going crazy," Austin said. "It's like, oh my God! It's Doug Clerget!"
Doug and son Austin take the fame in stride, and Doug doesn't regret his time on the show. It was an around-the-world adventure and a platform to share his philosophy of giving back.
"When I look back at my life, I want it to be worth something," Doug said. "I want to say I didn't just spend my life making money. I spent my life doing something that mattered and making the world a better place."
That is what prompted Doug and his sister to make DollarPerMonth.org. The concept was simple and unique, as users donations of a dollar or more per month are collected, and the donors vote on their favorite of three charities. At the end of the month, all three charities are benefited, with the highest votes getting the largest portion.
The site has received high praise from nonprofits and donors alike.
