(London.CityRegions.com, March 16, 2013 ) England, UK -- Corina Newby likes to take beach vacations, and when she can afford the getaway, she likes to take more than simply her sunscreen and swimsuit. Her smartphone and laptop are also always with her.
“For my own peace of mind, I want to stay connected. I get nervous if I actually unplug,” she said.
The 32-year-old social media manager likes to think her job requires a 24/7 commitment regardless of whether or not she is on the clock or not. While it may be worthy of mention to her bosses, it is also a more common site among Canadian travelers these days. Vacations simply now hold more work in them than they ever use to.
“In some ways, I obviously resent the fact that I do have to check in from time to time,” she said. “But if I wasn’t doing that, I would be more nervous and probably not enjoying myself anyway.”
And Newby is not alone in that feeling as 80% of Canadians state that they work during their holidays, according to Accenture's study. During March, many will check emails, catch up on neglected work-projects, and even take part in conference calls, all whilst on vacation.
“It’s hard for men and women to disconnect, especially in the digital age,” said Lisa Grill, women’s initiative lead for Accenture in Canada. “But I think it’s a learned activity. I don’t think it’s inherent.”
Accenture took surveys of 4,100 business executives in over 30 countries, including Canada. Globally, 75% stated that during a vacation or paid time off they would do work. The trend seems to point at an end to the work-life balance as many have known it within the last century, and not everyone sees this as bad news. For Newby, having the flexibility to work from anywhere, even poolside actually frees up her mind.
“I think when you’re really passionate and intellectually interested in what you’re doing, and you’re very dedicated to it, the idea of work and vacation being separate is not as appealing,” she said.
University of Western Ontario business professor, Christopher Higgins, stated that working during vacation or time off can actually be healthy (up to a given point).
“The key is to understand the work-life boundary,” he said. “I think mealtime with your family is a time you don’t cross it. I think going-to-bed time, with your young kids, is a time you don’t cross it.”
