(London.CityRegions.com, July 20, 2013 ) England, UK -- A new study is now revealing that many are practically clueless when it comes to understanding rights at work. Whether it be Christian, overweight, or those with an accent, many do not know how to confront or recognize discrimination on the job front.
A study held by the Allen & Overy discovered that a massive confusion takes place regarding workplace rights when it comes to the average level of understanding. The lawyers gave individuals a list of varying characteristics that were specific to the considered protected within the workplace.
Over a third of all of the surveyed individuals had no idea that Christian were protected from pointed discrimination at work. A 50% tally though it was discrimination on the the grounds of physical characteristics such as height or weight, when it was actually regarding christian. Only 37% understood race discrimination was protecting people with Scottish accents.
In the United Kingdom, there are nine characteristics that are protected under the laws that involve protection from discrimination. Age, disability, gender, reassignment, marriage partnership, pregnancy, race, religion, sexual orientation or gender were all under protection.
Each was open to bringing a claim up when they are overstepped in the workplace.
While race is specifically listed, not every worker appreciated that the concept of 'race' does not end with color or ethnicity. Romany Gypsies, Irish travelers, and Scots are all within protection rights when it comes to discrimination law. Simply because one looks something like a Brit does not mean that they are not still protected under race. The accent matters not, though it can often be impetus for discrimination, even subconsciously so.
Accents are part and parcel to the nationality or ethnic standing of an individual, thus copying someone's accent falls on the wrong side of the rules, especially in ill-mannered jest. The act violates the dignity of the individual and his/her heritage. It can be considered intimidation or humiliation to mock in their native tone.
In the survey a mere 28% noted nationality-based mocking or stereotypes were protected under the law of discrimination.
