(London.CityRegions.com, July 26, 2013 ) London, UK -- Yahoo, Facebook, and Google have already done well to make their server centers efficient. Each has now added emphasis on renewable energy being misplaced in such usage. A new study now suggests that more energy could be saved if the more companies would fall in line with the IT giants sooner rather than later.
According to the report released recently, effective ways to reduce energy consumption in server farms it to allow the IT equipment to be more efficient. That, plus improving of energy consumption within very data centers will be helped by utilizing renewable energy where applicable
Adding the renewable energy will, according to reports, help reduce the overall emissions by nearly 100% when it is combined with other proven strategies. However, renewable energy is not the top choice for reducing emissions for companies.
“Of these three, improving the efficiency of the IT devices is overwhelmingly the most important,” said Jonathan Koomey, a co-author of the study, “Characteristics of Low-Carbon Data Centers,” published online June 25 in Nature Climate Change.
Increasing IT equipment efficiency is more effective for companies to utilize when saving money on lowering emissions, according to the study. Much of the effort that goes into making processors can be created in a more efficient manner. That will save money for companies while lowering overall emissions significantly.
One strategy for saving on processor power involves chips being powered down when not in use. A secondary strategy reduces the computing assignments so that the processors use less energy when not in direct use. The final concept for bettering the system is to use flash memory rather than hard drives for short term memory operations.
“State-of-the-art data centers have reduced the ratio to about 1 to 0.1 kWh,” said study co-author Arman Shehabi of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory’s Environmental Energy Technologies Division. “They locate server farms in cool climates like the U.S. Northwest, Sweden and Iceland. They purchase processors that are less sensitive to heat. And they use efficient cooling equipment and air-flow management.”
