(London.CityRegions.com, July 31, 2013 ) England, UK -- In the wake of hundreds of alleged crimes on cruise ships in the past two years, Carnival Corp., Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings have publicly pledged to voluntarily publish data about crimes on their cruise ships.
According to a Senate committee report released last Wednesday, of the 959 incidents reported by the FBI by the companies since 2011, only 31 alleged crimes were disclosed publicly on a website the Coast Guard maintains.
Se. John Rockefeller, called for stricter reporting rules for criminal incidents that occurred on cruise lines ships, so consumers had a way of finding out their real risks of endangerment from other passengers. He believes consumers have the right to know crime reports for a cruise line company before they book a cruise.
Adam Goldstein, president of Royal Caribbean International, spoke before Rockefeller and his committee on Wednesday and pledged voluntarily expand their crime rate reporting in the spirit of transparency.
As of August 1st, Royal Caribbean will begin posting data for all cruise divisions dating back to the fourth quarter of 2010.
