(London.CityRegions.com, May 09, 2014 ) Newbury, West Berkshire -- Various studies have been carried out to look into the health benefits of omega fatty acids for dogs. The results have shown wide range of benefits. Omega oil for dogs is not only great for healthy skin and glossy coat.
The study "Responses of dogs to dietary omega-3 fatty acids" concluded that "Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids from fish oil and other marine sources appear to be capable of modifying inflammatory and immune responses in dogs." (J Am Vet Med Assoc. 2007 Dec).
While the study "Nutritional alterations and the effect of fish oil supplementation in dogs with heart failure" revealed that fish oil supplementation may benefit patients with heart failure (J Vet Intern Med. 1998).
The study "Omega-3 fatty acids in Boxer dogs with arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy" showed that fish oil supplementation for 6 weeks reduces arrhythmia in Boxers with ARVC and that it could be useful in treating this common disease (J Vet Intern Med. 2007).
The study "Long-chain (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids are more efficient than alpha-linolenic acid in improving electroretinogram responses of puppies exposed during gestation, lactation, and weaning" indicated that "preformed dietary (n-3) LCPUFA is more effective than ALA in enriching plasma DHA during perinatal development and results in improved visual performance in developing dogs" (J Nutr. 2005).
Simply put, this highlights the importance of fatty acids for pregnant and lactating bitches and growing puppies.
While this study on humans "Omega-3 fatty acids, energy substrates, and brain function during aging" looked into the effects of omega fatty acids on the brain function and concluded "it may be time to consider whether the main omega-3 fatty acids have distinct but complementary roles in brain function" (Prostaglandins Leukot Essent Fatty Acids. 2006).
This study "Effect of daily food supplementation with essential fatty acids on canine semen quality" concluded that "daily supplementation with omega 3, omega 6 and omega 9 fatty acids, together with vitamin E, for a period of 60 days, significantly increased the semen volume of the treated group after 15 days of supplementation; the vigour and concentration of spermatozoa were superior after the first month of supplementation, while the percentage of morphologically abnormal spermatozoa decreased and the cells were protected against thermal stress" (Reprod Domest Anim. 2009)
The study "Effects of feeding a high omega-3 fatty acids diet in dogs with naturally occurring osteoarthritis" revealed that high level of omega-3 from fish origin improves " the locomotor disability and the performance in activities of daily living. Such nutritional approach appears interesting for the management of OA" but OA stands for osteoarthritis (J Anim Physiol Anim Nutr (Berl). 2012).
The National Center for Biotechnology Information (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov) has published all above studies. There are extracts from the all on the NCBI website.
Birgir Gislason, the CEO of MaxxiDog says: "these are just few studies into the various health benefits of omega fatty acids for dogs. To summarize, high quality fatty acids formula for dogs, like MaxxiOmega Oil, can help to reduce inflammation and improve immune responses in dogs, may benefit dogs with heart failure and arrhythmia, can improve visual performance in developing puppies, may improve brain function, improves volume and quality of canine semen, and may be valuable for the management of dog osteoarthritis".
Birgir adds "somewhat ironically, most dog owners give their dog's omega fatty acid supplement solely to improve their skin health and get shiny coat. They are totally oblivious of all the other health benefits for their dogs".
