download Tumeric is one of the active ingredients in MaxxiFlex Plus dog joint supplement (London.CityRegions.com, June 05, 2014 ) Newbury, West Berkshire -- Turmeric is a plant. The Latin name of turmeric is curcuma domestica, but turmeric contains curcumin, which is the active ingredient that provides most of the health benefits associated with turmeric.
New study (Efficacy and safety of Curcuma domestica extracts compared with ibuprofen in patients with knee osteoarthritis) was published 20 March 2014 in the Clinical Interventions in Aging.
This Study compared the effects of ibuprofen and turmeric in 367 patients with knee osteoarthritis over 4-week period. All the patients had a pain score of five or higher at the start of the trial but the study measured pain, stiffness, function and total scores.
The study concluded that turmeric was as effective as ibuprofen for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis but impressive 96-97% of all patients were satisfied with their treatment.
The side effect profile was also similar but there were fewer gastrointestinal adverse events reported in the patients that took turmeric. So the bottom line is that turmeric is as effective as ibuprofen but with less side effects.
Various other studies have shown great results of using turmeric to treat rheumatoid arthritis in humans.
Human and canine joints work the same so turmeric is also powerful joint pain relief for dogs.
Turmeric has been found to have anti-inflammatory effects in arthritic pets comparable to the NSAID drug Phenylbutazone (The Natural Health Bible for Dogs & Cats by Dr. Shawn Messonnier DVM).
Birgir Gislason, the CEO of MaxxiDog explains, "Turmeric is anti-inflammatory and powerful antioxidant and has been used for thousands of years in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Westerners have increasingly been using turmeric to treat various diseases, including joint pain. And not only for themselves, many have been giving their pets turmeric as well".
Asa Gislason, the co-founder of MaxxiDog adds, "Dog owners have been adding turmeric directly to their dogs diet, but many find it confusing how much to give them and how best to give it to them. Most find it easier to supplement their dog's diet instead and this is why our dog joint supplement, MaxxiFlex Plus, includes turmeric, as well as other effective dog joint ingredients, like Glucosamine, Chondroitin, MSM, Hyaluronic Acid, Bromelain and Devil's Claw".
Birgir adds, "There are not many joint supplements for dogs that include turmeric, which is strange as there are such a strong scientific supports for its efficiency for humans and animals alike".
Turmeric is a safe natural pain relief for dogs and humans in the right dosage. Dog owners should though seek VET advice if the dog is on other medication, as turmeric may interfere with other medications, like NSAIDs. Turmeric should not be used during pregnancy.
