(London.CityRegions.com, July 31, 2014 ) London, England -- According to research published in the American journal Circulation, adults in their 30s or 40s who decide to change to a healthy lifestyle can control and possibly reverse the development of coronary artery disease.
For the study, researchers looked at links between healthy lifestyles and coronary artery thickening by studying 5000 or so participants between the ages of 18 and 30, and then again 20 years later.
The factors the researchers considered were: being physically active, not being overweight, not smoking, eating healthily, and drinking low amounts of alcohol. At the start of the research, less than 10 per cent of the participants said they followed all five healthy lifestyle behaviors. Twenty years later, about a quarter of them had added at least one of the healthy behaviors.
According to the study, every move by a participant to one of the healthy lifestyle choices could be linked to a lower risk of detectable coronary artery calcification and thickness - two major warning signs of cardiovascular disease.
On the other hand, researchers discovered that when participants dropped healthy habits or picked up poor habits as they got older, there was a negative impact on their coronary arteries.
"This is wonderful news," says Monica Kaiser, Founder of Seraphina's Kitchen. "As we get older and become more set in our ways it can seem as though it's too late to make simple changes that can improve our health. Reducing the amount of fat we use when cooking is a good start and our non-stick baking mats do that for you".
Bonnie Spring, lead investigator of the study and a professor of preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, said that the study debunks the idea that by adulthood it is too late to make lifestyle changes that will lower the chances of developing coronary artery disease.
She added that it is clear from the study that a healthy lifestyle requires upkeep. To enjoy a healthy lifestyle at any age, she advises no smoking, keeping a healthy body weight, exercising for 30 minutes five times a week, and eating healthily. "Eating healthily can be much easier when you cook for yourself as you are in control of the ingredients you use," says Kaiser. "Work smarter not harder in the kitchen and use a silicone baking mat to save time on the washing up".
