(London.CityRegions.com, October 26, 2014 ) Newbury, West Berkshire -- MaxxiDog has just released a new video, Noise Phobia In Dogs. It is part of MaxxiDog YouTube series about various dogs health related issues, providing information and advice for dog owners.
Noise phobia is quite common, as most dogs do not like loud noises. Most common phobias include fear of fireworks and thunderstorms.
There are things that dog owners can do to help their dogs overcome their fear of loud noises. Simple changes in the dog's environment can be all it takes.
Birgir Gislason, the owner of MaxxiDog says "The video offers some practical tips for dog owners to assist them to help their dogs to cope better with loud noises. Dogs are highly unlikely to start loving fireworks or thunderstorms, but they can learn to live with them".
Things that dog owners can do to ease their dog's noise phobia include:
- Provide secure place / den for their dog - Look all doors and window so the dog cannot run away - Take the dog out on a leash to do his business - Keep the collar on at all times (just in case he managed to run away) - Turn on the radio or TV to dampen the noises - Provide favorite toy or treat to distract the dog - Feed the dog prior to the firework display / thunderstorm starts - Give the dog extra vigorous exercise before the loud event starts - Make sure the dog has access to plenty of fresh water - Never leave the dog home alone during loud events
How the dog owner acts is also crucial as dogs look to their owners for guidance. If the dog owner is anxious, then the dog is likely to be anxious too. The dog owner must therefore stay calm at all times and ignore the noises.
It is also important never to punish the dog for being afraid. That said it is not good to over comfort him either. The best approach is to ignore any fearful behavior and leave the dog alone in his secure place.
Birgir Gislason adds "calming aid for dogs can help most dogs to relax more during noisy events. The above rules still apply but good quality canine calming aid, like MaxxiCalm, can really take the stress out of the situation for the dog, and the dog owner. Ideally, the dog should be given the calming aid for couple of weeks prior to the big event".
