(London.CityRegions.com, March 12, 2015 ) Dunblane, Perthshire -- Hehir of In & Out Health, says that working at a desk or computer station for the majority of the working day can take it's toll on muscles and the skeletal system. At the beginning of the day attempts will be made to find a comfortable sitting or standing position for the role required to be performed. However as time passes the posture adopted at the beginning naturally changes as muscles begin to ache, sometimes with a detrimental effect as the new posture may put more strain on the muscles, which can cause an increase in aches and pains.
To ensure minimisation of muscular and skeletal issues when working at a desk all day long it is important to ensure good posture, which is comfortable. A comfortable working position is to allow for joints to be in natural alignment. When the body is held in a comfortable position, stress and strain on the muscles, tendons, and skeletal system are all reduced, which further reduces the risk of developing a musculoskeletal disorder (MSD).
Regardless of how good the initial working posture is, working in the same posture or sitting still for prolonged periods is not healthy. Hehir advises that work place employers provide Health and Safety at work and Occupational support networks that offer advice and tips on workplace best practices. This can include taking regular short breaks for a few minutes to change position, walking and or doing some stretching exercises and advice about best postures as outlined below. Hehir, fully supports the advice given but would add that relaxing the muscles prior to undertaking stretching exercises is advantageous as it softens tense muscles, before stretching them. One way to do this is to use the hands to knead and massage the muscles or alternatively to use some device.
Hehir, believes that their Mini Instant Massager would be of great benefit to those working at a desk. It provides a powerful massage, lightweight, compact, portable, and can be powered directly from the computer as it comes with a USB cable connection OR it can be powered by batteries. It only requires to be used regularly for a couple of minutes each time. The massager can be used anywhere on the body and at anytime. She adds that many customers are already gaining benefit from using their Mini Instant Massager.
United States Department of Labour advise that the following considerations are important when attempting to maintain comfortable body posture while working at a desk or computer workstation:
- Hands, wrists, and forearms are held in-line and approximately parallel to the floor.
- Head is forward facing, balanced and held in-line with the body and level, or bent slightly forward.
- Shoulders are dropped and relaxed and upper arms hang down at the side of the body.
- Elbows are held close to the body and are bent between 90 and 120 degrees.
- Feet are fully supported by the floor or on a footrest if used, feet should be slightly forward of the knees. Knees should be approximately at the same level of the hips. Thighs and hips require to be generally parallel to the floor.
- Back is fully supported with appropriate lumbar support when sitting vertical or leaning back slightly.
- Thighs and hips are supported by a well-padded seat.
Hehir adds that she wishes everyone a pain free, happy life.
