(London.CityRegions.com, May 13, 2015 ) London, UK -- Apple Pay has been available in the United States since October 2014, yet there is still no sign of it coming into use here in the United Kingdom. This mobile payment system, which works with the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, or Apple Watch (paired with iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, or iPhone 6 Plus) had been expected to be available to British users during the first half of 2015. Indeed it has been reported that Apple had been in talks with UK banks about introducing Apple Pay to these shores at the end of 2014. But any discussions appear to have reached an impasse.
The reasons why talks between Apple and the British banks stalled remain unclear. One reason appears to be that the banks were not happy with the amount of customer information that would have to be passed over to Apple to allow Apple Pay to work in this country. The other is very likely down to money. Apple charge banks fees for Apple Pay and there are strong rumours that British banks are unhappy with what they are being asked to pay. This is the case in Canada where Apple Pay is likely to be launched in November this year. The Canadian banks appear to be resisting charge levels higher than those being met by their counterparts in the United States and there is no reason to suspect that the UK banks are being treated any differently. The non-appearance of Apple Pay in the UK is frustrating for those who own Apple devices and prefer to make mobile payments.
George Balfour-Kinnear of Boom Products, the company which produces the Shock-2 Hybrid Protection Case for the iiPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, said: "I am one of the many people who prefers have little cash in my wallet, and where I can avoid using credit cards in favour of online payment providers such as PayPal. I own Apple devices which if I were in America I could use to make payments with Apple Pay, but I can't here in London. Hopefully late 2015 will bring Apple Pay to the UK".
This is all the more frustrating because Apple Pay is a quick and efficient way to pay for goods and services. The irony for many travelling through London is that mobile payments for travel on the underground can be made using NFC. Unfortunately those tickets will not be paid for, or any other purchases made in the UK using Apple Pay until Apple and the banks broker an agreement.
In the meantime the Great British Public is left asking: "When will Apple Pay be coming to the UK?"
