(London.CityRegions.com, May 23, 2015 ) London, UK -- Customers spending less than £20 are now required to pay for all deliveries for shipments following a move by online commerce giants Amazon. Under the company's "Super Saver Delivery" customers had previously been eligible for free delivery provided they had spent £10.
There had been rumours that Amazon was set to increase the minimum spend, but according to media sources executives had refused to confirm or deny the speculation. Once the increase was confirmed the only consolation for customers was that any purchases ordered prior to the cut-off date, April 29, which met the previous £10 minimum spend, would still be entitled to free delivery.
People ordering books on Amazon, for the moment at least, will escape the new minimum hike, but the move has still proved controversial.
Inflation in the United Kingdom is at an historical low, but one reason for Amazon's decision to double the minimum spend for free delivery appears to be the poor performance by the American-based company during the last quarter when it posted losses of $57m (£36m).
Another reason, and one that is been expounded by critics is that the minimum spend hike was introduced to drive customers towards the Amazon Prime service which costs £79-a-year.
Steve Mader from the Kantar Retail consultancy told the BBC: "There is always a pressure on Amazon from its investors to increase profitability, but I think the bigger factor is trying to shepherd people into Prime membership as well as improving the margins on each basket."
The doubling of the minimum spend has proved to be as much a disappointment to vendors as it is to customers. A spokesperson for Boom Products, which produces the Shock-2 Hybrid Protection Case for the iPhone 6 and IPhone 6 Plus, sold largely through Amazon in the UK, said: "We are disappointed that Amazon has chosen to change its shipping policy. However, we are standing by our customers who have been caught out by the change and anyone ordering our products between now and the end of the month will still be able to enjoy free delivery by entering the promotional code BOOMFREE at checkout on Amazon.co.uk."
The Daily Express has published an article outlining "simple tricks" to get around the £20 minimum spend for free delivery which states that if a product pre-order is made for another item to take the total above £20 free delivery will still be qualified, before subsequently cancelling the pre-ordered item. The question remains how long will it be until Amazon closes this loophole.
